CAN film crew assaulted at MOA camp

Video crew sought comment on MOA founder’s taped statements, but were met with violence at Red House, Virginia compound

RED HOUSE VA – Muslims attacked a Christian Action Network film crew Wednesday, May 21, at the Red House, Virginia, Muslims of America compound.

The crew was there with a written invitation to visit, wanting to use the occasion to gather comments on video footage they wanted camp residents to see.

The crew attempted to present a video, unedited and produced entirely by Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani, founder of Muslims of America, and ask questions about what Gilani said about his strategy for training “Soldiers of Allah” in America.

CAN president Martin Mawyer, not present with the crew, said the violence was unprovoked, and one assailant’s instantaneous demand for the crew to leave made no sense at all.

“We printed-out invitations off the Muslims of America website saying anyone should feel welcome to visit – this was before anyone from us went out there,” he said.

The invitation noted as offered in Gilani’s own words on the MOA website, reads, “Muslims of America villages and campuses are open for all to come and see for themselves.”

Crewmembers said they were not shaken but stirred, after the scuffle that included a struggle by one cameraman to keep his camera from being taken away. As the crew left, a man drew near the side of their Nissan Armada and clubbed it with a cane.

At a debriefing after the incident, Mawyer asked the crewmember if he had had enough. “Let me ask you this, are you willing to do this again?”

“Absolutely, any day, everyday,” the cameraman said, “I’m ready to go now, right now – you just let me know where.”

That CAN crewmember did file an assault charge with Charlotte County General District Court Thursday in connection to the scuffle.
