Rally at Poly turns heated over fighting in Gaza

The rally initially announced by Students for Justice and Peace in the Middle East also was attended by a large contingent of students from the Cal Poly Israelites organization.
Both sides support peace in the Middle East and denounced civilian deaths. About 750 Palestinians and 12 Israelis have died in the 13 days of fighting in Gaza, an assault launched by Israel in an attempt to halt rocket fire from the territory, which is controlled by Hamas, a militant Islamic group.
Yet many from both sides also point fingers at the recent violent actions taken by the Israelis and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.
“The military actions taken by the Israelis aren’t justified when many of the victims are children and civilians,” said Annie Shin, a Cal Poly biology major. “They’re punishing the wrong people and this is only the beginning of a drawn out war in the Middle East.”
Students for Justice and Peace in the Middle East hosted the rally to decry the killing of civilians. But some of the Poly Jewish students said the attack was sparked by the rocket fire of Gazan militants.
“Israel is simply defending itself against Hamas until it stops rocket fire,” said Benjamin Nejathaim, a Cal Poly architecture student. “There was a cease fire negotiated and Hamas broke that cease fire by using terrorist tactics.”

What kind of logic is this? So it's alright for Hamas to fire rockets at innocent children and civilians as long as they're Jews...gimmee a break! Annie Shin should stick to her biology and maybe study a little psychology on the side. Let's see, If Annie's neighbor fired rockets into Annie's back yard and threatened her children, then according to Annie's logic, that's perfectly OK! One must always defend their family and if that means shooting back at the agressor then so be it!

moquiti, if it happened right now I think we all know what the response would be. If it happens after January 20th, we will be asking them to "please stop it!" and we would try to figure out why they are angry at us.

I can see both sides to this issue. Unlike most of my liberal friends, I feel that Israel has only been able to survive by taking fast swift action against groups like Hamas. I have a lot of Jewish and some of their parents were in Nazi death camps, it seems like everyone is out to kill them all. On the other hand I do feel sorry for the Palistinian people as well. They need to work, be safe and have have homes. I can't understand how Hamas came into power, that was the worse thing for the Palistinians. If Israel is soft then they will be wiped out. I wish that they could live peacefully together, but that will never happen.

No, suddenly 12 million people would hurriedly return to Mexico and you'd pay $5,500 for a head of lettuce! Then we'd compensate each of them and eventually they'd all sneak back.

I heard an interesting comment recently. If suddenly the Mexican government started shooting rockets into San Diego and refused to stop, what do you think the US response would be? I would say that within weeks if not days, we would be purchasing flags with 51 stars.
