Namibian police have intercepted a suspicious object with a running clock and detonator on an Air Berlin jet from Windhoek to Munich.
But Germany's Federal Crime Office said it is not yet clear if the object found aboard the Airbus is an explosive device.
Germany is currently on high alert after receiving intelligence pointing to a planned attack towards the end of November.
Bavaria's Interior Minister said large cities are likely targets for terror attacks.

"Looking at the normal attacks from the Islamist area we need to be aware that the large cities in Germany are the targets. An attack in the countryside is less likely as it is all about spectacular targets, whether it is Berlin or Hamburg, Frankfurt or Munich, we do not have any concrete evidence."
Germany has now stepped up security measures.
On Thursday barricades were being put up around the German parliament building in Berlin.
Security is especially tight at airports and train stations - where guards armed with automatic weapons are on constant alert.
