Most Americans are completely in the dark when it comes to foreign policy.  To put it in alarm mode, most Americans might someday wake up and find themselves surrounded by people they thought were a hemisphere away...sort of like, "Out of sight, out of mind."  History tells us that there are conquests made by one country over another in a constant battle to be 'the' king of the mountain.  At the end of each battle (in reality there's never an end, there's always a new  kid on the block who wants to display his superiority) the losers usually fade away into obscurity and/or succumb to the dictates of the winner...as I write, the American Indian comes to mind.  For awhile...which could be several hundred years, those that do the dominating may have built up some respect for their newly found strength by those yet too weak to challenge.  Occasionally, some pipsqueak will come along who thinks he's got what it takes to knock off the top guy and threaten him with nuclear devastation only to find out the resolve of his adversary is so overwhelming that he runs off like a dog with its tail between its legs and we've seen this with Kim Jong-un the leader of North Korea, aka Rocket Man.  Then there's the opposing ideology of another country with long range plans to infiltrate the opposition because they're not capable of a military victory. Russia is one such country.
"One day we shall start to spread the most theatrical peace movement the world has ever seen. The capitalist countries, stupid and decadent ... will fall into the trap offered by the possibility of making new friends. Our day will come in 30 years or so... The bourgeoisie must be lulled into a false sense of security." ~ the Lenin School of Political Warfare in Moscow, Russia 1931
Just as our Founding Fathers planned/conspired to rid themselves of the inequities imposed by King George, other countries also conspire among themselves to topple the longest lasting reign of one country over another, the United States big win over England.  The country that we should concern ourselves with is obviously, China.  I say, "obviously" but most Americans are not even consciously aware of any threat from the land across the seas.  In fact, they're not even minimally conscious because they are not informed.  We can blame this aspect on a previously mentioned country, Russia.  Russia has won some of their long range goals and that is their conquest of the American news media.

So while we dilly-dally with the fake news of the day China takes note of not only our foreign policy but that of our domestic policy and the mindset of America as a whole...a whole that is currently divided in to many parts not yet separated enough to make their move...but they plan ahead...in fact a hundred years ahead!  ~ Norman E. Hooben

The Hundred-Year Marathon: China's Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower
Hudson's Michael Pillsbury on China's competition with the U.S.
This is without question the most important book written about
Chinese strategy and foreign policy in years. —Robert Kagan

In The Hundred-Year Marathon, distinguished defense and national security policy advisor Michael Pillsbury asserts that since its founding, the People’s Republic of China has outwitted the U.S. with the goal of restoring China to its rightful place atop the global hierarchy. Based on work that earned Pillsbury the CIA Director’s Exceptional Performance Award, the book incorporates interviews with Chinese defectors and newly declassified national security documents to challenge the misguided assumptions in Washington about a gradually reforming China.
On Tuesday, February 3, Hudson Institute hosted a discussion with Pillsbury, director of Hudson’s Center on Chinese Strategy, Representative J. Randy Forbes, Chairman of the Congressional China Caucus, and Senior Fellow Husain Haqqani on the implications of a China-led world order and the policy options the U.S. should implement while developing its own competitiveness strategy.

Update:
Chinese bombers likely training for US strikes: Pentagon
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Chinese bombers are likely training for strikes against United States and allied targets in the Pacific, according to a new Pentagon report that also details how Beijing is transforming its ground forces to "fight and win".
The annual report to Congress, released on Thursday (Aug 16), highlights China's growing military, economic and diplomatic clout, and how Beijing is leveraging this to rapidly build its international footprint and establish regional dominance.
In the case of China's air power, the report states that Chinese bombers are developing capabilities to hit targets as far from China as possible.
Over the last three years, the PLA (People's Liberation Army) has rapidly expanded its overwater bomber operating areas, gaining experience in critical maritime regions and likely training for strikes against US and allied targets," the document states, noting how China is pushing its operations out into the Pacific.
In August 2017, six Chinese H-6K bombers flew through the Miyako Strait, south-west of the Japanese islands, and then for the first time, turned north to fly east of Okinawa, where 47,000 US troops are based.
The PLA may demonstrate the "capability to strike US and allied forces and military bases in the western Pacific Ocean, including Guam," the report says.
LARGEST GROUND FORCE
China is engaged in a decades-long build-up and modernization of its once-backward armed forces, and military leaders have set a goal of fielding a world-class military by 2050.
President Xi Jinping last year ordered the PLA to step up efforts, saying China needed a military ready to "fight and win" wars.
The call has alarmed China's neighbors, several of whom are embroiled in tense border disputes with the superpower.
According to the Pentagon, the PLA in April 2017 undertook a massive transformation of operational and tactical units as part of its structural reforms.
With nearly a million troops, the PLA is the largest standing ground force in the world.
"The purpose of these reforms is to create a more mobile, modular, lethal ground force capable of being the core of joint operations and able to meet Xi Jinping's directive to 'fight and win wars,'" the Pentagon report notes.
China's military budget for 2017 was about US$190 billion (S$260 billion), according to the report, far behind the Pentagon's annual budget of about US$700 billion.
When the Pentagon released its annual report last year, Beijing dismissed it as "irresponsible" in predicting that China would expand its global military presence by building overseas bases in countries like Pakistan.
This year's report reiterates that China will seek to establish new bases in such countries.
Key to this expanding footprint is China's "Belt and Road" initiative that seeks to bolster ties with other nations through lending and infrastructure deals.
TAIWAN 'CONTINGENCY'
The document also shines a light on China's ongoing military preparations for a "contingency" in the Taiwan Strait.
Officially, China advocates for a peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but it has never repudiated the use of military force, the document notes.
"The PLA also is likely preparing for a contingency to unify Taiwan with China by force, while simultaneously deterring, delaying, or denying any third-party intervention on Taiwan's behalf," it states.
"Should the United States intervene, China would try to delay effective intervention and seek victory in a high-intensity, limited war of short duration."
In addition, to the ire of regional neighbors, China has built a series of islets and ocean features into military facilities in the South China Sea.
Beijing has now stopped substantial land reclamation.
"However, it continued to build infrastructure at three outposts," the report says.
