Former CBS News president Richard Salant (1961 - 64 and 1966 - 79) explained the major media's role: "Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have." ...and to this very day most Americans haven't noticed they're being brained washed! ~ N. Hooben
The manner in which Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera and his Minister for Mining were personally involved in the rescue operation of 33 miners trapped in a collapsed mine 2,050 feet below the surface in San Jose gold and copper mine for 69 days, displays the priority that their elected leadership had for the lives of their citizens. Their story of survival and extraordinary rescue operation mounted by government of Chile captured the world’s attention. The last to emerge from the mine was the foremen of 33 miners trapped below. In the final operation, which lasted over 48 hours, the President of Chile and his Minister for Mining were personally present at the scene to welcome each miner as he came out.
Compare this to the apathy of our former President Musharraf who handed over thousands of our citizens to foreign countries for bounty money and was so proud of his shameful act that he mentioned this in his autobiography as a feat. When floods ravaged Pakistan and millions were displaced and thousands died, our elected President embarked on an extended tour of France, UK, Syria etc, without bothering to cut short this trip and be present in Pakistan. As if this was not enough, the PM’s family was busy shopping at London’s Harrod store, totally unbothered about the enormity of tragedy that had struck millions of their unfortunate citizens. This mindset displays the apathy of a nation’s ruling elite and their conscientious disconnect from the people that they rule. Bob Woodard in his recent book has quoted our President of having stated that civilian collateral damage does not bother him. It would be unfair if this sickening disconnect is confined only to the present ruling political party, because the same apathy is displayed by the leading opposition parties and our military-bureaucratic oligarchy.
This is your final update. Megi will soon peter out...
The winds have quieted down some and will be expected to become less than hurricane force by this time tomorrow...or sooner. You haven' missed much unless you were at sea...sort of like this:
Unless of course you were this guy:
Typhoon Megi only hours away from Philippines
MANILA : Typhoon Megi gathered strength as it barrelled towards the northern Philippines on Sunday, as authorities began evacuating thousands of villagers to safer ground hours before it was to hit land.
State weather forecasters said Megi has developed into a super typhoon and was expected to slam into the extreme northern Philippines by Monday and then cut westwards towards the South China Sea.
It was then expected to hit China, becoming the country's strongest typhoon this year and prompting the weather agency to issue its second-highest level of alert, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Megi could uproot trees, blow away houses made of light material, trigger landslides and cause storm surges in coastal areas, Philippine authorities said as they began evacuating people from vulnerable communities.
It is expected to hit the northern province of Cagayan on Monday, and as of Sunday afternoon was already 450 kilometres (388 miles) east of the area, the state weather bureau said.
The storm was packing maximum winds of 195 kilometres an hour near the centre and gusts of up to 230 kilometres an hour, making it a super typhoon, forecasters said.
"Some are still gauging the situation, but those who are living in low areas have voluntarily gone to higher ground," said Benito Ramos, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
He said thousands of people have already temporarily relocated from communities along the Cagayan river system, which had overflowed during previous typhoons.
President Benigno Aquino ordered all government agencies to be on high alert to prevent casualties, while the coast guard was instructed to ban all fishing vessels from setting off to sea in the north.
"The president is reiterating that all agencies concerned should be ready for the approaching super typhoon Juan (Megi)," said Abigail Valte, a deputy spokeswoman for Aquino.
She warned the public against complacency, amid reports that the weather in some northern provinces remained clear as of early Sunday.
But Norma Talosig, regional chief of the Office of Civil Defence, said the government was not ruling out forced evacuation for those who refused to leave their homes despite being told to do so.
"If we have to conduct forced evacuations, we'll do it for their safety," Talosig said over national radio. "Our main objective is the safety of the community, the safety of the responders."
In Manila, disaster officials said food packs, medicine and rescue equipment, including rubber boats, were ready in areas expected to be lashed by the typhoon.
National police spokesman Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz said additional search and rescue teams from Manila were en route to the north to bolster forces there.
"We have also declared a full alert status all over the country," Cruz said.
The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 typhoons a year, some of them deadly.
Tropical Storm Ketsana and Typhoon Parma struck the northern Philippine island of Luzon within a week of each other in September and October last year, triggering the worst flooding in recent history.
The twin storms killed more than 1,000 people, affected nearly 10 million and caused damage worth 4.3 billion dollars according to the World Bank and international humanitarian agencies.
The US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center in its latest advisory Sunday said Megi had undergone "rapid intensification", but could weaken as it moves across mountainous terrain after hitting Luzon.
Megi would then begin to steadily re-intensify as it leaves the country heading for the South China Sea, it said.
China meanwhile warned its vessels to take shelter in ports and urged local authorities to prepare for emergencies caused by wind and rain, Xinhua said.
Obama claimed to be a Christian yet he is the world's biggest Islamic sympathizer and almost the entire Muslim community supports his ambitions...and a sleeping America will wake up one Sunday morning not to the sounds of church bells but to the call of the azaan at the break of dawn... ~ Storm'n Norm'n Oh, before I forget...check out that sentence, "The coming Eid would expectedly be observed on 9/11..." If this isn't an admission of guilt I don't know what is... To name a religious holiday in honor of 9/11 is the ultimate insult to America...it's also their (the Muslims) reason for wanting to build their victory mosque at ground zero. Eid on 9/11 a Islamic religious holiday! Wake the hell up America, 9/11 is a day of mourning not a holiday!
ISLAMABAD – In a development that could be duly termed as one and only of its kind, an incumbent Government’s Minister has urged US President Barrack Obama to offer Eid prayers at Ground Zero Mosque and become “Ameer-ul-Momineen” of Muslim Ummah.
Minister of State for Industries and former member Pakistan Ideological Council Ayatullah Durrani called TheNation on Wednesday to register his demand made to President Obama.
“The coming Eid would expectedly be observed on 9/11, this a golden opportunity for President Obama to offer Eid prayers at Ground Zero and become Amir-ul-Momineen or Caliph of Muslims. In this way, all the problems of Muslim World would be solved,” he thought.
Durrani argued that Muslim World was in “dire need” of a Caliph and the distinguished slot of Caliphate would earn President Obama the exemplary titles of what he termed, “Mullah Barrack Hussain Obama” or “Allama Obama.” “The time is approaching fast. Barrack Hussain Obama must act now. This is a golden opportunity, Muslims badly need it,” he added, saying that the elevation of President Obama to Muslim’s Caliphate would be the “key to success.”
