Easily Terrified, Mindless Christian Lemmings "We are, as far as urban public education is concerned, essentially at rock bottom. We are now at a point where we are essentially churning out ignorant teens who are becoming ignorant adults and society as a whole will pay dearly, very soon, and if you think the hordes of easily terrified, mindless fundamentalist evangelical Christian lemmings have been bad for the soul of this country, just wait." - San Francisco columnist Mark Morford, writing for SFGate.com, the Web site of the San Francisco Chronicle and picked up by Kristen Fyfe of MRC's Culture and Media Institute October 24.
In Case You Missed It
Chris Matthews Tells 'Fellow Democrats' What to Think Biased reporting is one thing, but when program hosts start campaigning on the air, it's over the top. Here's how Chris Matthews did it opening the Oct. 29 edition of Hardball: "Good evening, I'm Chris Matthews and welcome to Hardball. The 2008 election, that's the spotlight tonight. Iowa, which starts the whole thing January 3rd, is now a dead heat between Hillary and Obama. Here's what I think Obama should say, starting tomorrow night, at the big MSNBC debate in my hometown of Philly..." Matthews then puts words in Obama's mouth, suggesting that he link Hillary to both "endless war in Iraq" and the "inevitable war with Iran," suggesting that only he could get us out of "the rut of fearful politics and endless war." Matthews then concludes (presumably to get to the "news") -- "So there you have it. It's for you, my fellow Democrats, to decide. If you think Bush would have succeeded with his policies, if they were better executed, then go with Senator Clinton. If you think the Bush policies were wrong, dead wrong, I'm with you." – MRC's CyberAlert Tuesday Oct. 30
Fires Subside But Bush Still Takes Heat
California's wildfires are now under control, but President Bush is still taking the heat. Powerless to resist the liberal compulsion to bash Bush, ABC and CBS evening news broadcasts Oct. 28 quickly left the good news about the fires for graphic reminders of Katrina. With heart-tugging video of victim anguish in New Orleans, one reporter whined that Bush just "flew home from vacation" and "never stopped." There was no mention of the times Bush visited both New Orleans and Mississippi. And as for his recent California trip, thanking firefighters and consoling displaced homeowners, all the nets could manage was "the President came to a burned-out area to press the flesh..." – CyberAlert Monday Oct. 29 and NewsBusters Sunday night Oct. 28
"Worst Notable Quotables" from the past 20 years.
Here are just a few:
"... if everyone on Earth just stopped breathing for an hour, the greenhouse effect would no longer be a problem." – Newsweek Senior Writer Jerry Adler, 12-31-1990.
Evangelical Christians who like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson "are largely poor, uneducated, and easy to command." – Washington Post reporter Michael Weisskopf in a 2-1-1993 news story.
"I hope his [Justice Clarence Thomas's] wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease... He is an absolutely reprehensible person." – USA Today columnist Julianne Malveaux on PBS's To the Contrary 11-4-1994.
"... when the last referendum took place, Saddam Hussein won 99.96 percent of the vote. Of course, it is impossible to say whether that's a true measure of the Iraqi people's feelings." – ABC's David Wright in Baghdad, on World News Tonight, 10-15-2002.

Dead Silence !
When in England at a large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush. He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return." It became very quiet in the room.

Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 5,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?" Once again, dead silence.

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, 'whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe its because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German' You could have heard a pin drop!
Good for him! I'm glad that this American Vet had the guts to stand up for what is right. If these people want to fly their flag above an American flag, let them go back to their own country and do it! Who the heck do they think they are, anyway?
