In Honor of America's Greatest...with an 'Honor Flight'

Posted (including photography) by Norman E. Hooben, CPT, Alabama State Defense Force
"And if we're not careful, if we don't personally take the time to record these precious WWII memories, then these fascinating personal stories, and the greater histories which they entail, will be lost to us forever." Those are the words a friend, Roger Gardner, writes at the introduction to his story, "Lest We Forget: The Heroic Saga Of The Philadelphia V". An excellent epic based on a chance encounter with an 86 year old former seaman...or veteran, if you will, of the United States Navy; just one element of the greatest generation.

Today I had the oportunity to meet a number of those veterans and unsung heroes...and to take part, in a small way, by providing assistance to the good people over at the Wiregrass Honor Flight Hub an all volunteer unit that takes WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial...and at no cost to the veteran! Great people!

The following pictures were taken at the Dothan, Alabama airport as our heroes prepare to depart. This is their Honor Flight...and if we're not careful, if we don't personally take the time... Believe me when I say it, "Thes heroes are worth every minute of our time!"

Many walked to the aircraft....

Some needed a lift...

Some had stories to tell...

They wore their hats proudly...
...although I saluted many others I put a little extra snap into the salute I gave this honored veteran. No others who have served their country gave as those who gave their all.
.... and then there were the POW's.

Several members of my unit watch as the Honor Flight departs for Washington, D.C.

Water Gun Salute...a well deserved send-off!
